Southbound, the first 11km are on gravel road, and the final 15km on paved road. The intervening 65km are on a combination of dirt roads and good trails through farmland and open woodland. There are many fences to cross. There are a few easy kms of cross-country and investigative route in the middle of the section. There is a border crossing from Argentina into Chile between Carrenleufú and Palena. The Chilean officials may examine thoroughly any food being imported.
