To the knowledge of the author the Greater Patagonian Trail is the first and currently only long distance hiking trail in South America that exceeds 500 miles / 800 km, that is documented in detail, is continuous without any trail gaps and largely avoids roads with transit traffic. For other long distance trails in the Andes see [[#Other notable Long Distance Trails and Hikes|Other notable Long Distance Trails and Hikes]].
