Incredible views of the icefield! Clockwise is very nice. Amazing weather window without any wind, very comfortable but also quite some people. Didn’t meet anyone else doing clockwise so we were alone on the first day, met dozens of people on day 2 but only during lunch and at camp, on day 3 much less and day 4 just a couple. Clockwise lets you climb de steep and eroded trail up to the huemul pass which we consider safer. An early hiker was coming down, didn’t see us and a large boulder coming down almost hit Isabelle. So better start early to avoid being with other people on this steep part. Beautiful family of condors flying over very low.
We did a little detour to de Campamento Laguna de los Esquies (-49.38273, -73.15105 ) few km west of the paso del viento to get closer to the icefield, here are just a couple of sheltered spots. It’s a great alternative to the busy Refugio paso del viento. At least ten camping spots with little stone walls against the wind are at the campamento closer to the paso del viento (see osm map).
At one of the tyrolers we met a duo that had their harness upside down and way too lose while crossing. We could help them, but it seems many people don’t know what to do. There are good videos online if you’ve never done it before. The rivers were low and fording looked actually very doable at the right spots.
If you want to avoid the busy Toro campsite a good spot is on the gravel where the river enters the Laguna Toro (-49.38590, -73.05945). Next to a rockwall on its western side but we didn’t have wind so not are how sheltered it really is. In the stream next to trail we caught cool red tiny copepods in our drinking water (don’t use soap).
