==Season 2025/26==
* '''2025-11-28 to 2025-11-30 / 3 days / Hiking / NOBO / RR68 + OH68-03C + OH68-03 + OH68-01 / Pierrick G'''
General information:
- Water is scarce along this section (notably only at Lake Yehuin and the 15km stretch north of Tolhuin). The area between Lake Yehuin and Rio Grande is quite dry, so plan your water supplies accordingly.
- There are no resupply options along the route.
- Public WiFi may be available at Estancia Rivadavia (waypoint 39.7/101) and at the private neighborhood "Las vertientes bosque" (coordinates: 53°59′09.57′′ S 67°40′09.41′′ W).
- No issues were encountered crossing the southern part of Rio Grande alone by foot during the day, though this area is not generally recommended.
- After Lake Yehuin, the route becomes monotonous until Rio Grande; consider hitchhiking (cars pass between 7:30-9:00am and 5:00-7:00pm; very little traffic in between).
- Packraft is not useful in this section, except for exploring lakes like Yehuin.
- Day 1 :
Tolhuin to Estancia Rivadavia – 35km
Depart Tolhuin following the road in front of supermarket La Anonima (open 10:00-13:30 on weekdays).
Enter the provincial reserve via a forest track; water is regularly present in this first segment.
After 2 bridges, the forest begins; follow red dots marked on trees for an enjoyable, well-marked trail.
At point 54°27′23.86′′ S 67°21′14.00′′ W, the forest ends and river crossings begin.
Warning: At 54°27′13.48′′ S 67°21′30.61′′ W, one river crossing is deep (~1.3m); try a different spot or put your pack on your head. No current.
'''Caution: The route crosses an extremely dangerous peat bog at 54°26′50.64′′ S 67°21′52.12′′ W. Skirt the bog by going through the river or detouring 20-30m. The most dangerous part is darker. High risk of sinking.'''
At 54°26′13.33′′ S 67°21′53.09′′ W, took option 68-03C with two pasture fences to cross; pleasant route with beaver activity affecting the river crossing.
Rejoined the farm road north and then route 18 west toward Estancia Rivadavia, where locals offered a place to sleep and free unsecured WiFi. Be respectful—ask permission as it is private property.
- Day 2 :
Estancia Rivadavia to Las vertientes bosque – 25.5km walking + 47.5km by hitchhiking
Follow the dirt trail to Lake Yehuin, refill water (3L), then continue to Estancia Los Cerros.
Hitched a ride at 2:15pm to Las vertientes bosque for a pleasant bivouac.
Camping available in front of the private neighborhood entrance, and strong guest WiFi signal near entrance barrier. No water nearby.
- Day 3 :
Las vertientes bosque to Rio Grande – 25km
Long dirt road walk to Rio Grande; nothing notable. Follow GPS track (OH68-01) north, hitchhiking possible.
At 53°50′21.36′′ S 67°39′57.62′′ W, an abandoned caravan can be used as an emergency shelter if unable to reach Rio Grande (6km away).
Crossed southern Rio Grande on foot at 12:15pm (quiet on Sunday); area feels insecure but was calm.
In Rio Grande, Hostel Argentino is good for rest with nearby shops. Breakfast included, 25,000 ARS/night without towel. Laundry service possible on request if you don't have much clothing.
