Very scenic but quite demanding

Day 0: We hitchhiked from Entre Lagos to Puerto Rico. We were lucky, it took us just three cars and a we waited in total less than 15 minutes. We got out of the 3rd car 1 km after the start of the RR at a small beach of Lago Rupanco, but the Tabano situation forced us to leave the beach at once. Haunted by dozens of horse-flies we went up to the MR road at this point -40,89289, -72,27335. At the last house (last gate on the road), we found Rubin that was really nice, she has a beatiful house with view on the lake and nice rooms. We stayed here for the night.

In the evening we wrote a message to Rudy, made a reservation for the refugio Los Condores and the hotsprings on the way for the day after.
The number to make reservation : +56950180447.
Camping + hot tubes 12k
Refuge : camping 6k, hospedaje 12k. Desayuno 10k, almuerzo o cena 16k. Everything is homemaid by his wife. She also cell bread, eggs, bebidas.

Day 1: We started at 8.30 on the RR, first hours in the forest (no water! You hear a small river, but the access seemed very difficult), then CC on the volcanic plateau.

On the trail up, we pass throught settlers land, they were nice but told us that they charge people of 5k each when they go by this trail that is on their land.

Ascent to the pass on very steep volcanic gravel. 1300 m of altitude only to this point. Great view on the very close Volcan Puntiagudo. From now on much snow, but no running water. The ascent on Cerro Cenizo is very, very steep, we went partly on snow, partly on volcanic gravel. When you arrive at the summit (1640m) you have climbed all in all around 2000m of altitude. We arrived at 3 p.m. and had still a descent of 1200 m of altitude before us. Very steep down, when the CC ends less steep on the trail. First running water only close to the junction with OH1.

Rudy had opened the hut with 2 wooden bassins at 19.2 (one too hot to enter, the other one perfect, but it‘s not the same as a natural bassin with a hot spring). We arrived at the refugio los condores 23.2 at 7 p.m. and got a great dinner (and two rooms in the lovely hut). This was a really long and very physical day.

Day 2: Clara went back to Lago Rupanco, Volker continued to Lago Todos Santos.

Clara :
took OH 1 to get to Las Gaviotas. Very easy trail compared to RR. Should be muddy in rain weather. There are more parallel trails, some are in OSM, frequently used.
Laguna Los quetros was full of tabaños so I went directly down.

No boat at Las gaviotas to go to puerto buey.
Easy to hitchhike if you walk a bit the beginning of the road.

Volker: Rudy‘s price for the boat transfer over the Lago Todos Santos is now at 150k, which is a no-go. But the Elizabeth III boat from Peulla to Petrohue passes by on the lake on mo/wed/friday at around 9 a.m. It does not stop at the beach! Rudy called his cousin down at the lake and arranged an apppintment at 8.30 on the beach. So I started at 6 a.m. at Rudy’s, arrived after two hours of easy walking (mud at the beginning; can be done in 1,5hrs) at the beach and 30 minutes later Esteban arrived with his small boat. Once he saw the ferry approaching, we got to the middle of the lake, where I changed the boat. Rudy told me, Esteban would charge 5k, it was 10, but I was happy with that, too. On the ferry they took 5k (less than 1k for locals, but again….). It took 2,5hrs to Petrohue. Probably it would have been even possible to continue to Cochamo on the RR. Before going to Perrohue, the ferry went to the Rio Conchas bay, again one person was brought to the ferry on a small boat. It would probably have been possible to get on this small boat and to start the RR at the beach.
But my plan was to climb the V. Osorno.

The very nice guy at the Conaf in Petrohue told me, that shops to rent the gear are in Ensenada (Terra SUR, at the junction of the road coming from Peteohue). From Ensenada I hitchhiked to Refugio teskiclub (close to the Ski station, single room: 23k the night, food). The much less friendly Conaf guy at the station there (150m behind the refuge) told me in the evening, that I have to come in the morning and he will not allow me as a solo hiker to go to the summit, if there is no other registrated group. What a stupid rule! Luckily when I started at 5.a.m. in the morning he was obviously sleeping. Just don’t go to the station and you will have no problems! There were groups - and they didn’t registrer. It took me 3 hours first on volcanic gravel, later on steep and harsh snow to get to the summit. Breathtaking view all the time, highly recommended to all gpt-hikers , which are experienced in walking with crampons.
