Day 1
I walked all day on minor roads, almost 30 km. I hoped to hitchhike part of the way, but not a single car passed.

I did not take the GPT track of Option 1 via Laguna Isolde. I stayed on the minor road because I wanted to arrive early at the termas and have more time to enjoy them.

I arrived around 3 pm and decided to stay at Termas San Sebastián. They felt a bit more comfortable and cost the same as the Eco Camp (15,000 CLP). The owners are super friendly. There were only two other families.
I had an amazing campsite far away from the people, right next to the river.

Day 2
I started just before noon from the termas. I followed Option 1 until here: -39.116396, -71.680268, then I followed an OSM trail to Lake Caburgua.

I think this could be a good new option for the GPT to avoid problems with CONAF in Huerquehue National Park.
At the lake, the trail soon turns into a dirt road. There are some cars, so hitchhiking is possible. I walked along the shore hoping to find a camping spot, but no luck. Almost the entire lakeshore is private property.
In the end, I hitchhiked the last 2–3 km to Camping Los Maitenes (10,000 CLP). It’s a quiet campsite with electricity, warm water, and a washing machine. Not directly at the lake, but only a 5-minute walk.

The next day I took the bus to Pucón for a few rest days. Rain is coming.

Attractiveness: 3/5, Difficulty: 2/5

We didn’t stop in Reigolil at all. Section is very simple, road walk some parts a bit busy with traffic so some dust.
Stayed in Currarehue for two nights in Maxmafram cabañas for 40000 pesos for night.

Attractiveness 1/5
Difficulty 1/5

- The Regular Route avoids the popular but crowed National Parque Huerquehue where camping is strictly banned.

- GPT15 Option 1 (PN Huerquehue): Hikers that don't care about connecting footsteps may opt against the regular route and traverse Parque Huerquehue but must camp near the Termas del Rio Blanco before entering the national parque.

- GPT15 Option 2 (Cordon Peinetas): It is currently unclear if maintained trails ascent on this more eastern route to the forest roads on the other side of the mountains. If would be useful, if a hiker with good Spanish skills asks local residents and verifies this route.

- GPT15 Option 3 (Valle Panqui): This short cut is faster then the Regular Route.

05-MAY-2025 to 14-MAY-2025 / 6 days / hiking / NOBO / Option 3, RR, / Ben, Stephanie

Route from Curarrehue to Reigolil. Road walking through beautiful valleys, hiking the spectacular Nevados de Sollipolli, aracharia forests and hot springs.

We started on Option A because of wet, cold, snow forecast for Laguna Hualalafquén. Termas de Panqui are great: very rustic with several temperatures available. 40 mil per person for cute cabanas and 24 hour access to the pools. Perfect for a day of all rain and low clouds.

Trail over the pass to Reigolil is easy to follow with the GPS tracks, despite the dire warnings we received about slippery mud and getting lost.

Roky, mentioned in an earlier post, also offers lodging but he replied to us after we had already passed his location.

In Reigolil, the shop just past the Carabineros is adequate for resupply. Owner of the shop also has a cabana. Very friendly hospedaje right across the street, 20 mil per person and 2 meals a day. Call Lucy: 56985982289 and 56982524177. Spent 2 stormy days here.

Combined GPT14 and 15 and took 6,5 hiking days in total including the Sollipulli Summit ascent.

Highlights: Araucaria forests, Piñones, fast food, hospitable Mapuches, delicious blackberries
“Challenges”: Fallen trees and spinous blackberry bushes

Planned to spend our first night on GPT15 at Camp $ {15} [2.4+0.2/819]. Upon arrival we only found a deserted property with an empty house. Augusto, the neighbor at S 39°08.1453’ W 71°28.9760’ told us that the owner wasn’t at home but we could camp there anyways. Few minutes later his daughter Gloria offered us to sleep in a bed in a house on their property house for 20 luca. We happily accepted and got ice cold watermelon and some savory empanadas for second dinner - a stroke of luck after the restaurant in Reigolil was closed.

In the morning Gloria made a delicious breakfast for us, consisting of huevos revueltos, pan, ají, manjar casero and mate. We gave her 20 luca for the bed and another 20 for the two meals.

Augusto showed us a small cabaña he is currently building to host more hikers in the future. After using the power supply and internet for some planning and communication, we continued our hike in the afternoon.

At around S 39°11.0510’ W 71°28.0804’ we met a guy called Roky who offered us accommodation. We declined but noted his phone number for hikers who pass there in the future: +56 9 7820 4656

At S 39°13.0879’ W 71°26.1168’ we discovered a food truck just 200 m across the bridge from the RR. We ate one serving of delicious fried chicken, one of salchipapas and two soft drinks for a total of 11 luca. The owner told us he had opened this year.

Camped at S 39°15.0309’ W 71°25.9345’. Not ideal as it’s very close to the street but at least next to the river.

The next morning we ascended to Laguna Hualalafquén and spent one and a half days there, enjoying this beautiful place. Along the way we found a brand new mini shop (although closed when we passed it at round 8 in the morning) at S 39°17.8526’ W 71°26.0645’. Also picked a lot of delicious blackberries on our ascent.

On our second day at the laguna, we met fellow GPT hiker Peggy who pitched her tent close to ours and we had a nice chat with her.

Started early in the morning the next day to walk to Curarrehue. Filled out water bladders at the laguna which would not have been necessary as there is plenty of water on the way down.

Plenty of fallen trees that had to be climbed over or crawled under slowed us down on the way down. Got caught in blackberry bushes with nasty spines. Also found another locked gate which was super easy to climb around though.

From Curarrehue we originally wanted to take the next bus to Pucón (they go every 30 min), but then decided to stay a night and then even one more as this little town/village is very beautiful. Strongly recommended for hikers who want to take some time to explore a community where Mapuche culture is lived and celebrated.

From Curarruehue I walked on the boring road. Good thing about walking boring section is that I always meet a lot of people. I was 3 times invited for coffee or mate, ate many cherrys and learned a lot about the Mapuche communities up there. I did not hitchhike, but 2 cars stopped beside me and took me for a while. So all in all, I liked the section.
