Summary with Include remarks to about your route that are considered useful for other hikers and packrafters. Include , alerts, suggestions and personal perception of attractiveness and difficulties. Try to be specific. Do not be shy to fix obvious mistakes. =Overview= *General Recommendations: The Regular Route is best hiked from November to April. Hiking in either a northbound or southbound direction is feasible and recommended. The section is 40km long and takes about a day and a half to complete. Due to the ocasional overgrown state of the trail, bush bashing is required in several places and progress is a bit slow in many other places. However, the trail has been passable throughout. There are panoramic views, and an openness not common in adjacent sections. There are also a few kms of interesting bamboo forest. Previously, the opening few southbound kms of this section were officially closed, but they have since reopened. There is clear evidence of past fire damage in the opening segment and this has contributed to the openness of that segment.

Day 1

We continued directly from GPT24P, doing Option 2, i.e. crossing the lake arm diagonally to join RP. There was surprisingly no wind at all right at the bend and for the first ~2 km. Then the wind picked up again in westerly direction (coming from the west) and we started sailing. At the southward turn of the lake, wind increased a lot to ~40 km/h average and ~80-90 km/h gusts and turned to northerly wind (coming from the north) and pretty big waves (max 80 cm top to bottom, most 50-60 cm). One of them was so big that we had water pour over the front of our 2 person MRS Adventure X2 when going down the wave which was actually kinda scary. Overall we had our portion of adrenaline and at times we were scared of capsizing but nothing happened in the end. It was really exhausting though having to keep our boat aligned with the wind from the back. We didn't use our (makeshift tyvek groundsheet) sail since the winds were too strong. Meanwhile Antoine on his 1 person packraft (Kokopelli Rogue Lite) loved the surfing, with sail still on (sticks + jacket + IKEA bag attached to backpack at front), but constant attention required. We made it to the end of the lake where there are two campsites: Los Maitenes ([-42.89067, -71.61452]) and Las Rocas ([-42.88679, -71.60859]). The latter is much smaller, closer to the beach, has really nice and charming owners Miguel y Micaela, a nice hot shower, WiFi, is mostly solar powered and is 14'000 ARS per person and feels much more in the GPT spirit than the other, so we chose this one and spent two nice days of Christmas there. We got some additional food and drinks from their small store plus more from the shop in the other camping (fresh bread, gas canisters). The day after Christmas, they were extremely kind and took us all the way to Aldea Escolar in the morning so we could start the next section.

*'''2025-FEB-7 to FEB-8 / 1.5 days / Hiking / SOBO / RR + OH (Var. J) / Ivan, Jakub, Daniel, Martina'''

A relatively simple and short section without major complications. For most of the route, we stayed on the RR. The exceptions were at the beginning, where we followed a gravel road until the junction [2.4/558], and between km 27.6 and 28.6, where we followed a path marked in OSM data. This proved to be a functional choice, except for one steep climb and a fence crossing. The last deviation from the RR was along Variant J, where we stayed on the MR instead of following a trail that looked overgrown.

In general, most of the section follows roads that we would classify as minor roads, despite being marked as trails in the track files. We didn’t encounter any difficult bush bashing or major navigation challenges.

CHALLENGES

After the ford [8.7/610], the trail becomes somewhat unclear, making navigation slightly more difficult, but it’s nothing too serious. A similar situation occurs around junction X [14.1/785].

The most common obstacles on this section were fences, which we had to climb over multiple times.

At coordinates -43.00882, -71.57781 (km 16.5), there is a closed gate with a phone number to call for permission to pass through the property. We were unable to reach anyone, nor did we encounter anyone on-site. The next day, the landowner called us back and said we should have paid 4,000 ARS for crossing. However, since we were already far ahead, we didn’t pay anything.

WATER

Water is plentiful, with the trail crossing multiple small streams.

RESUPPLY

Villa Futalaufquen has a small shop in the center at the beginning of the section. It mainly offers snacks rather than staple foods, but it’s possible to buy supplies for a few days, including bread.

Aldea Escolar has a tiny shop. Since we needed a gas cartridge, we hitchhiked to Trevelin, where all necessary supplies are available.
