When going up river after leaving GPT 12, take the strong horse trail rather than the RR which stays a little higher. This brings you past not only 3 muddy baños but also a clean one which a Pehuenche couple were using. Great campsite right where the RR finally crosses the river.
Going up to the pass, just hike the creek. Resist all temptation to do any other cow or OSM trails. We had to do some backtracking because we didn’t resist:)
RR all the way to Guayallil is beautiful and straight forward.
Resupply at Romina’s is adequate. She had no gas for camping. Pedro, her husband, offered to have some sent in from Ralco but then it turned out that the cell service was out due to a Lightning strike 10 days previous. She charges 30 mille per person cash, she will feed you a huge amount of food 3 times a day with a room, very hot water, and washing machine. Great place and great conversations.
About piñones: There were tons. We learned in Lonquimay that if you crack open the raw ones using your back teeth, you can easily remove the shell. We then cut the raw de-shelled piñones into a few pieces and put them in with rice and noodles. They cooked up nicely and took no more gas than the rice or noodles.
