An amazing section with some spectacular landscapes unlike I’ve seen. Attraction 5/5, Difficulty 3/5. Highlights: Volcanoes (highly recommend sunrise on Descabezado summit), moon-like landscapes, oases, lakes. Challenges: Terrain - gravel and sand make for slower going. Combined with exposed landscape, I found myself taking more breaks to filter water/empty shoes of sand. Cows were mostly friendly with the exception of one herd that charged me; I had to CC a bit to give them and subsequent groups wider berths.
Route: I intended to start in Vilches Alto and cut to the RR via OH-1C, however a Park Ranger at Altos Lircay said the route was on private property/I’d need authorisation separate to the permit from Tamara. Instead, I walked SOBO to Volcan Hornitos (OH-2, RR, OH-3 (Descabezado summit), RR, Variant E), then flipped NOBO to Parque Inglés (RR, OH-3, OH-3D, RR). Not my finest route planning, but I really enjoyed the trail and didn’t find the minor backtracking tedious.
Camps
Night 1: Camping Valle El Venado (Camp/Park Ranger {06-02} [10.3/1158]). Caretaker Luis is very nice and up for a chat/mate.
Night 2: -35.598465, -70.827700. Flat, sandy. Water carried from stream just to the west of Puesto [45.7/1887]. Good option if spots around Puesto are full. Beautiful views.
Night 3: Camp [56.5/2034]. Grass, next to good flowing spring/river. More sandy/gravel spots around. Great views and sunset.
Night 4: -35.61019, -70.83741. Flat, sandy. Just above Water, Camp [48.3/1837] to avoid condensation/cows.
Night 5: -35.488088, -70.802925. Sandy, slightly sloped but easily flattened. Nearby Water [22.3/2279]. Nice sunset.
Water: As marked along the RR. I found no meltwater along Option 3 (noting I didn’t hike between X {06-03} [4.5/2690] and the intersection with Option 3D).
Fees: - 25kCLP to Tamara for permit. Paying with Caja Vecina was simple. She also provides options for digital transfers; Mercado Pago (if you’ve a RUT) and PayPal (31 USD). - Entry to Altos Lircay, 9.400CLP, purchased day before. - Camping Valle Venado, 6.000CLP, purchased at second CONAF office at parque entrance. I had intended to pass through the park that day, but was told by the ranger that it was too late to do so (10am) and I needed to purchase a camping ticket. I could continue through the park after if I wished. - No fees required at Parque Inglés exit.
