Puerto Williams. Leave town by the
road heading west. After about 1
the beginning of the trail at the end of
the road, next to a waterfall and the
dam.
Take the path that goes toward the
woods indicated by GUIDEPOST N°1; it runs parallel to the river course,
above the bank. Don't take the path
that follows the river, nor the one that
goes east. Hike through the forest for
10 minutes, then the path abruptly turns
east (GUIDEPOST N° 2), and goes
toward the side of the hill. Follow it,
always heading towards the steep
slope. After leaving the forest
(GUIDEPOST N° 3), stay on the path,
keeping the stakes in sight, until
reaching the low peak of Cerro
Bandera (stone landmark and
GUIDEPOST N° 4). Be careful not
to step on the low, dense, and hard
green plant formations.
Head 230° and follow the stakes. After
a 10-minute walk from the low peak,
on the right (west) you will find the
high peak of Cerro Bandera
(GUIDEPOST N° 5). Withoutclimbing towards GUIDEPOST N°5,
go 180° and follow the stone
landmarks, passing the next hill on the
arrows drawn on the landmarks.
Farther ahead you will find
GUIDEPOST N° 6, that marks a small
river crossing, from where you should
bear 230° following the stone
project an imaginary route that is closer
to the tree line than to the ridgeline
(GUIDEPOST N° 7 and 8).
The foothills route will take you above
Laguna del Salto (GUIDEPOST N° 9).
There you should turn right, and climb
down a steep slope toward the lagoon.
Carefully descend in the direction of a
large dark rock, on top of which you will
find GUIDEPOST N° 10, located about
40 meters away from the Laguna del
Salto shore. End of first segment.
===LAGUNA DEL SALTO Segment 2===Laguna del Salto - LAGUNA ESCONDIDALaguna Escondidathumb|leftthumb|right Circle Laguna del Salto on theleft (east). To the south of the lagoon,a knoll (rocky promontory) dropssharply to the shore; at its base lie bigrocks under the water. Climb beforethe knoll, immediately to the left ofthis (GUIDEPOST N° 11), followingthe creek closest to the rockypromontory that runs by a steep-sidedgulch.
Continue for the length of thegulch until crossing the knoll's peak. Then turn left (east) and follow thenatural course of a small windingvalley that extends up to a wide plain(GUIDEPOST N° 12). After crossingthe river, climb to the right over a largehill covered with grass and peat mossthat lies in the center of the plain.Follow the crest of the hill until arrivingat a small, rocky pass - "Paso Primero"- from which you descend to a creek.
After Paso Primero, follow thecourse of the creek until reaching theentrance of the high valley(GUIDEPOST N° 13), where it iscommon to find snow, even in thesummer. Follow the valley to the left(east), bearing 140°, until reachingPaso Australia (GUIDEPOST N° 14)marked by an important landmark ofstones.
Go to the right of the lagoonlying at the foot of Paso Australiawithout climbing down toward thelagoon. Follow the route situated inthe middle of the foothill, bearing110°. A dangerous pass, above allwhen the ground is wet or there areslabs of snow. Project an imaginarybearing while always keeping themarkers in sight.
Thus, you get to Paso de losDientes that looks to the south(GUIDEPOST N° 15) Go down tothe valley that opens up on the otherside of the pass, going to the left ofthe lagoons. On the south shore ofthe third lagoon you will findGUIDEPOST N° 16. Turn to the right, bearing 240°, continue towardLaguna de los Dientes. On the eastshore you will find GUIDEPOST N°17. Circle it to the north until reachingits west shore (GUIDEPOST N° 18),up to the point where a valley opensup to the right. Follow it, bearing290°, until arriving at LagunaEscondida where you will findGUIDEPOST N° 19 on the east shore.End of segment. For campsites, check the options offered byGUIDEPOSTs 16, 17, 19, and 20.
===Segment 3===Laguna Escondida - Laguna Martillothumb|leftthumb|rightthumb|right Circle Laguna Escondida on theleft, bearing south, and follow theriver a short way. After a brief distance(GUIDEPOST N° 20), enter the valleythat opens up to the right, bearing210°. Paso Ventarrón is in view;project an imaginary bearing, veeringtoward the north slope, cross the shrubforest, and continue to nearly the endof the valley. On the left, at the footof Paso Ventarrón you will findGUIDEPOST N° 21. From thatlocation, you will be in front of a short, abrupt slope that leads to the pass.Once in the pass (GUIDEPOST N°22), do not go down the other side ortoward the foothill, continue climbingto the right (bearing west), forroughly 10 minutes before goingdown to the valley. Go down theright side of the valley to the footof Paso Guerrico (GUIDEPOSTN° 23).
Climb up a short, steephillside, bearing 230°, go throughthe middle of a small forestgrowing among large rocks, untilreaching Paso Guerrico(GUIDEPOST N° 24). CircleLaguna Hermosa to the left untilfinding the outlet (GUIDEPOSTN° 25). Travel north, zigzaggingamong the shrub forest, untilreaching Laguna Martillo. On thesouth end, near the shore and onthe edge of a small beaver dam(GUIDEPOST N° 26), you willfind campsites. End of segment.
===Segment 4===Laguna Martillo - Laguna los Guanacosthumb|leftthumb|right Starting from the southeast shoreof Laguna Martillo (GUIDEPOST N°26), circle it on the right until reachingthe peninsula that separates the mainbody of the lagoon from its northwestend. From there climb to the right(GUIDEPOST N° 27) to cut over thispeninsula toward the north. Once backat the Laguna Martillo shore(GUIDEPOST N° 28), follow itWITHOUT ASCENDING to the right, until reaching the outlet. From there(GUIDEPOST N° 29), bear 330°,toward a white rock that stands out inthe distance on the peak of a hill.
After reaching this rock(GUIDEPOST N° 30), continue thesame bearing (330°), and then goaround the right shore of the narrowLaguna Rocallosa. Next to the wateryou will find an accumulation of largerocks over which you will have to cross.
In maintaining this direction, youwill reach a large white rock(GUIDEPOST N° 31) on the other sideof Laguna Rocallosa. From this location, you will be able to see Paso Virginia tothe north. This is the best possible pointfor observing the road to get up to thepass: from here set an imaginary linemarking the direction; this should unitea clearing in the lower part of the forestwith the peak of a small denuded cliff, then another clearing in the upper partof the forest, and finally the base of thepass that stands out due to a depressionin the ridgeline.
To reach the first forest clearingfrom GUIDEPOST N° 31, keep walking, going to the right of the next lagoon, until reaching a rock hill (GUIDEPOSTN° 32). Turn to the right i a smallclearing inside the woods and climb ina straight line until reaching the smalldenuded cliff mentioned above. Climbit, veering to the left, this way youshould reach a creek located in the lowerpart of Paso Virginia (GUIDEPOST Nº33). From here bear 30°, passing by theright of the creek, then continue upwardamong the small lagoons that aresometimes formed, until arriving at thepass (GUIDEPOST N° 34).
CAREFUL! If you go beyond thestone pyramid, that GUIDEPOST Nº34 indicates, to admire the beautifulview of Laguna del Guanaco and theBeagle Channel, you should considerthat the edge is an unstable snowledge hanging over a 300 meter-highcliff. Also, violent and unpredictablewind blasts are a common occurrencein the whole area; they can knockyou off your feet and drag youdownhill.
From GUIDEPOST Nº 34, turnto the right and continue a shortdistance to go around the ledge, thentake the foothill to the left, whichleads to a group of black stones thatstick out. Carefully follow the markersthrough the foothill, they cross a verysteep slope. Then, turn to the left andgo down the steep slope to the areanear Laguna Los Guanacos. Followthe Guanaco path on the west shoreup to the outlet (GUIDEPOST N° 35).From the Los Guanacos lagoon outletto the left of the river, at the startmoving away from it toward a pastureand then, coming closer to continuetoward the forest. At the exit of theforest go down the gulch, followingthe course of a creek until arriving atLaguna de Las Guanacas(GUIDEPOST N° 36). End ofsegment, for a camp spot check theoptions on GUIDEPOSTs 35 and 36.
===Segment 5===Laguna los Guanacos - Puerto Williamsthumb|left|Perfil de altura quinto tramo From GUIDEPOST Nº 36 goaround Laguna Las Guanacas on theright; slightly before reaching theoutlet, turn toward the forest. Continueon through the forest, descendingtoward a terrace with a lagoon in thecenter. Go around it on the right upto halfway, there look again to theright for the path that goes into abeaver-damaged forest. Then crossthrough a high forest; from there, thepath tends to go north and follows thefoothill on the right of the valley, going down toward the end of it(GUIDEPOST N° 37).
Farther ahead, you should goaround several beaver ponds and crosssome patches of woods that are at thefoot of a rocky cliff. Then, at thebeginning of the slope covered withgrass and Calafate underbrush thatfaces the Beagle Channel, you willsee a conspicuous dry tree trunk: amarker has been placed on itindicating the end of the markers andthe heading to follow (GUIDEPOSTN° 38). From there on, zigzag downthrough the Calafate underbrushlooking for the coast and the visiblebuildings of Pesquera MacLean. When you get to the fish factory, follow the road to the east for 8kilometers, in about two hours youwill reach the city of Puerto Williams.End of circuit.
