- GPT10 Option 3 (Ruta Fronterra): This completely new route was suggested and investigated by Manon and Robin and connects GPT10 Option 1 with GPT11 on a more eastern route by traversing the mountain ridges along the border to Argentina. This route bypasses the more populated valleys along the regular route where in rare cases some tension with the local Pehuenche population was reported. This route also bypasses Guallali. Thererfore, more provisions are required.

3 MAR-2026 to 6 MAR-2026 / 4 days / hiking / NOBO / RR Ben, Stephanie

Easy walking mostly road from Guayallil to Laguna El Barco campground. Lots of camping en route. Campground was 12 mille for 2 people. There are lake facing sites but also a whole section in a beautiful trove of Araucarias up the road a tiny bit from the lake.

We did the waterless volcanic plateau without issues by leaving at dawn to minimize the heat. We camped at Laguna Liay. As others have said, follow the horse trails down to the lake. They get a bit loose and missing for the last part so we had to scout around a bit. The sandy beach is well worth the extra effort.

The third day, we camped about 7 km from Trapa Trapa. The campsite marked is now fenced off but a clear horse trail crosses water a little ways down and there’s adequate camping nearby. No more good camping after that.

In Trapa, the new almacén (about 1.5 km from where GPT 10 joins the main road) is fairly comprehensive. But no camping gas. We took the bus to Ralco for gas which we found at La Frontera minimercado on the plaza. Lodging is available at Hostería Las Montañas or at La Frontera (30 mil for a room with kitchen, hot water, etc)

We connected with Mario Manuepi in Butelebun (+56 9 33299018) to get transport to Thermas Chancho Ko before continuing onto GPT 9

About piñones: There were tons. We learned in Lonquimay that if you crack open the raw ones using your back teeth, you can easily remove the shell. We then cut the raw de-shelled piñones into a few pieces and put them in with rice and noodles. They cooked up nicely and took no more gas than the rice or noodles.

Crushed like a can. I was hungry and tired.
Slept just past first camp (8km). Battled off some cows per the usual.
Lots of animals in valley, the climb is okay.
At Laguna Barco, the descent puts you on someone’s property, barbed wired all around, but you can just barely unhook gate to get out, and put back.
Caught a ride to Los Angeles, lost my sunscreen and phone charger broke so gonna reoutfitt!

'''2026 March 5 to 7 / 2.5 days / Hiking / SOBO / RR, 10-1, RRreverse, 10-D, RR / Oriol Girona'''

My hghlights of this section: taverse around Volacan Copahue, termales Pucon Mahuida and collecting piñones that I cooked at laguna el barco.

Great views at camp by the cliff, just before puesto (7.3 1898) on 10-1, probably better at km 7.7

Camping el barco, selling cookies and sodas. Nice place by the lake.

Note OH-TL-V {10-D} [7.2+1.1]. Its now a MR, same as the rest of 10-D that looks recently updated.

Arrived at noon at Romina"s place in Guallali. If you are flexible, her shop has just enough to keep going without leaving the cordillera for resupply. Laundry available at request . A family side business worth to support, a good place to rest, interact with and learn from, this lovely family. Planning to just have lunch, I end up here for 2 nights ;-)

Attractiveness 5/5 Difficulty 3/5

* ''' GPT10 | 2026-01-13 to 2026-01-15 I 2 days | hiking | SOBO I Route: RR - Variant D - RR | Michaela '''
Day 1: Started from Trapa Trapa at 2 pm. There were many more Puestos in the valley than shown on the map. I camped here: -37.811107, -71.274823, a very nice grassy spot next to a stream.

Day 2: Camped at the campsite at Laguna El Barco. I was surprised by the number of people there on a Wednesday. It was possible to buy tortillas, sopapillas, drinks, and sweets. I paid 8,000 CLP for the campsite.

Day 3: Hiked to Guallalí and had a delicious lunch (10.000 CLP) at Romina’s place. Bought a few snacks at her shop and continued on GPT11.

Attraction: 4/5, Difficulty 2/5
