=Overview=
* General Recommendation: the critical point (the crux of the section) is the ford of Rio Claro/Quinto. This river crossing not too far from the southern start Lago Verde. Therefore it is highly recommended to go northbound and attempt this section after most of the snow is molten and without heavy rains predicted. If you walk southbound and can't cross Rio Claro or Rio Quinto you face a long & rough walk back.

==Season 2025/26==
''' GPT27/2026-01-30 to 2026-02-02/3,5 days/ SOBO/RR-variant D,E/Denis, Robert '''
Good resupply option in Palena.
No water issues for the whole section.
First day was easy going mostly on minor road and last kilometers on trail.
After kilometer 20 you need to ford Rio Azul few times but water level was up to my knee. We slept at the end of the valley at 32km. We forgot caffe filter there, so if you find it it’s yours.Nice spot next to the river before going uphill.
CC is not difficult, it is basically slalom between small bushes but always with the good option to avoid them. At elevation 860m we joined really nice trail leading us to the pass. Nice camping spot at km 36 with water anywhere on the meadow or as well in the pass nice small lake with tiny island in the middle and amazing views from the both spots. Way down from the pass is fine on trail with few fallen trees but nothing crazy.
Then from 40 km as we got down to lake it started. From here to 76 km when we forded Rio Claro it was very challenging. Don’t expect more than 200 meters of trail without fallen trees. And expect slower pace something around 2-2,5km/hour. At least trail is almost everywhere visible. So it is easier to navigate.
On this stretch there are some better and worse parts.
40-47km, 52-54km many fallen trees you need to climb over or go around.
68-76km fallen trees, mud and trail goes everywhere but not straight where you would expect. ( this part took us almost 4 hours)
After fording river at 76km it is easy going trail and there are many nice camping spots in forest for next 7km. We missed the RR so we stayed on variant D and then variant E seemed to be much easier and we had enough of fallen trees.
Difficulty 5/5
Attractiveness 3/5

*'''2025-FEB-13 to 2025-FEB-16 / 3,5 days / Hiking / SOBO / RR+OH (var. D, E) / Ivan, Jakub, Daniel, Martina'''
A beautifully wild and forested section, full of fallen tree crossings but also offering some stunning viewpoints.
At coordinates (-43.7153061, -71.8151759), the MR ended at a fence, beyond which bush bashing seemed likely. Instead, we followed a small path uphill to a road (end of variant A). As the steep ascent began, we stayed on the trail marked in OSM maps. The trail occasionally faded, but it wasn't that hard CC. Just below the pass, we found Chaura berries.
The descent toward Lago Palena includes some sections where we had to deal with some fallen trees. However, the real challenge comes in the stretch between Lake [43.2/948] (Puntilla Lopez) and Refuge ? [45.7/974], where fallen trees become a major obstacle. From this point, the number of fallen trees blocking the trail decreases significantly but remains enough to haunt your dreams at night. The houses near Refuge, Park Ranger [52.1/947] appear abandoned.
The river crossings near the lake at km [62-62.8] were passable with dry feet due to low water levels. From Camp [68/809], the trail becomes very muddy. A simple trail starts after the crossing at [75.6/375]. We followed the path until we reached variant D, which was a longer but nice detour. The crossing at [85/402] was also dry-foot passable. The trail leading from X [90.2/543] appeared overgrown, so we opted for variant E.
CHALLENGES:
Fallen trees blocking the trail
Muddy path sections
BIVOUACKING:
Before the pass ascent [37.1/1367], there are plenty of tent spots near the creek.
Several camping spots are available near the lake.
We spent the night at the lake’s inlet, just past the crossing [43.0/943].
The next night, we stayed at Camp [68/809], which offers multiple tent spots and a fire pit.
WATER:
Water is plentiful throughout the section.
RESUPPLY:
We arrived in Lago Verde in the evening. The only store open on Sunday until 21:00 was at coordinates (-44.2385274, -71.8502104), offering a decent selection of supplies. Another supermarket at (-44.2408180, -71.8494809) reportedly opens at 10:30 on weekdays.

| Meteo : petite pluie, soleil, petite pluie, nuages et vent
| Eau : facile
* <span style="background-color:aqua;">'''GPT27H Option 3 / Lago Rosselot / Round Trip / 2024-Nov-18 and 19 / 2 days / Meylin Ubilla and Jan Dudeck'''</span>
We opted to paddle this scenic lake as part of our packrafting warmup at the beginning of the season.
For me, Lago Rosselot is part of the top ten packrafting lakes of the GPT. The north-south orientation makes this 22 km long lake relatively wind protected. There are a few houses on the northern terminus and at the two river deltas 5 km south of the northern terminus. So most of the lake is pure wilderness. Packrafters that paddle Rio Palena should consider stopping at La Junta, paddle this lake and continue with Palena.
The mostly steep shore limits the exit options significantly. Suitable camp sites are at the northern terminus, both river deltas and at the southern terminus. Packrafters best go to the southern terminus in one day and return on the next morning. To avoid wind on a normal sunny day best get up early and arrive early.

* '''2024-Feb-15 to 2024-Feb-20 / 5 days / Hiking / SOBO / RR - {27-E} - RR / Lilian'''
* '''2023-Mar-10 to 2023-Mar-14 / 4 days / Hiking / SOBO / RR / Martin & Helena'''
Quite challenging section, especially in cold and rainy days we had. The trail around Lago Palena is not very well maintained and hundreds of fallen trees are making hiking there pretty difficult. Expect rather more hiking hours to finish the section than what is in manual.

*'''2023-Feb-21 / 4 days / NOBO / RR / Frank'''
19KM on small road from Lago Verde, then you reach a settler's house. Go round the house to right, handrailing a wooden fence. RR goes in on a small trail, a bit overgrown with lots of fallen trees & muddy most of the way to Lago Palena. About 40KM from the settler's house to Lago Palena, average speed 2KMPH. The crux crossing is the first one on Rio Claro/Quinto NOBO. If you can cross it all crossings should be OK. It was a little under waist deep when I crossed, late in season & weather had been dry. There is a small hut just after the crossing. Continued to second crossing of Rio Claro & camped there (a long day) On day 2 I went round the lake & reached the CONAF huts. Going round the lake was OK, I was able to throw a few rocks for stepping stones & get by with dry feet. The CONAF huts are partly built & look abandoned. Continued to Lago Palena & camped on the shore. There is a campsite/refuge marked on the track file above Lago Palena on a rock outcrop, couldn't find it & no trail to it. Best to camp at the lake.

==Season 2019/20==
* '''Martin Lizondo / 8 to 14-Jan-2020 / Hiking Southbound'''
Río Claro/Quinto currently impossible to cross. Recommended time: February after some days with no or little rain. Best hike northbound to cross this river at the beginning of the traverse. See also log for further recommendations.
Now (15-Jan-2020) it snowed at the mountains again, so rivers may be impossible to ford. From that reason I consider February to be the best time to hike this section, better going northbound, in order to ford Río Claro/Quinto as soon as possible.
