==Season 2025/26==
* '''2025-11-28 to 2025-11-30 / 3 days / Hiking / NOBO / RR68 + OH68-03C + OH68-03 + OH68-01 / Pierrick G'''
General information:
- Water is scarce along this section (notably only at Lake Yehuin and the 15km stretch north of Tolhuin). The area between Lake Yehuin and Rio Grande is quite dry, so plan your water supplies accordingly.
- There are no resupply options along the route.
- Public WiFi may be available at Estancia Rivadavia (waypoint 39.7/101) and at the private neighborhood "Las vertientes bosque" (coordinates: 53°59′09.57′′ S 67°40′09.41′′ W).
- No issues were encountered crossing the southern part of Rio Grande alone by foot during the day, though this area is not generally recommended.
- After Lake Yehuin, the route becomes monotonous until Rio Grande; consider hitchhiking (cars pass between 7:30-9:00am and 5:00-7:00pm; very little traffic in between).
- Packraft is not useful in this section, except for exploring lakes like Yehuin.
- Day 1 :
Tolhuin to Estancia Rivadavia – 35km
Depart Tolhuin following the road in front of supermarket La Anonima (open 10:00-13:30 on weekdays).
Enter the provincial reserve via a forest track; water is regularly present in this first segment.
After 2 bridges, the forest begins; follow red dots marked on trees for an enjoyable, well-marked trail.
At point 54°27′23.86′′ S 67°21′14.00′′ W, the forest ends and river crossings begin.
Warning: At 54°27′13.48′′ S 67°21′30.61′′ W, one river crossing is deep (~1.3m); try a different spot or put your pack on your head. No current.
'''Caution: The route crosses an extremely dangerous peat bog at 54°26′50.64′′ S 67°21′52.12′′ W. Skirt the bog by going through the river or detouring 20-30m. The most dangerous part is darker. High risk of sinking.'''
At 54°26′13.33′′ S 67°21′53.09′′ W, took option 68-03C with two pasture fences to cross; pleasant route with beaver activity affecting the river crossing.
Rejoined the farm road north and then route 18 west toward Estancia Rivadavia, where locals offered a place to sleep and free unsecured WiFi. Be respectful—ask permission as it is private property.
- Day 2 :
Estancia Rivadavia to Las vertientes bosque – 25.5km walking + 47.5km by hitchhiking
Follow the dirt trail to Lake Yehuin, refill water (3L), then continue to Estancia Los Cerros.
Hitched a ride at 2:15pm to Las vertientes bosque for a pleasant bivouac.
Camping available in front of the private neighborhood entrance, and strong guest WiFi signal near entrance barrier. No water nearby.
- Day 3 :
Las vertientes bosque to Rio Grande – 25km
Long dirt road walk to Rio Grande; nothing notable. Follow GPS track (OH68-01) north, hitchhiking possible.
At 53°50′21.36′′ S 67°39′57.62′′ W, an abandoned caravan can be used as an emergency shelter if unable to reach Rio Grande (6km away).
Crossed southern Rio Grande on foot at 12:15pm (quiet on Sunday); area feels insecure but was calm.
In Rio Grande, Hostel Argentino is good for rest with nearby shops. Breakfast included, 25,000 ARS/night without towel. Laundry service possible on request if you don't have much clothing.

* '''Frank / partly on RR flip flop / Dec 19-21 2023 and Jan 23 to 25 2024 / 6 days (4 full days and 4 half days including walkout after the hike)'''
1. I talked to the carabineros at Pampa Guanaco and they allowed me to walk to the border which was then closed. It is now open. Very little traffic but I hitched a lift for about 8KM with a worker from Estancia Bellavista which is near the border. Walked back and camped at Pampa Guanaco. The next day I hitched to Rio Grande via the San Sebastian border.
Followed Ruta 107 a few KM to Ruta 18. Saw no traffic on Ruta 107. A few vehicles on Ruta 18. There is plenty of water in the forest & some in the meadows but once you are on the road there is no water until you reach a campsite at the West end of Lago Yehuin. I walked on Ruta 18 & in the evening I got a lift for about 6KM & walked down to a good campsite by a ruined Hosteria on Lago Yehuen. It's marked as Picnic Site on Openstreetmap.
4. From the camp at Lago Yehuin I walked to the road junction at Los Cerros. Here I paused the hike as the frontier at Bellavista is currently was closed. I walked back about 11KM to the point where I got a lift the day before & then hitched back to Tolhuin.
5. In January went by Uber from Rio Grande to the Bellavista border which cost about 25,000 pesos or 21 euro. Uber is cheaper than taxi. I asked the Argentinian police and they allowed me to walk to the border without crossing it. I continued on RR SOBO from the border via Estancia San Jose. Route goes CC from the Estancia then picks up a small trail which bypasses Estancia San Justo. It soon joins a road which you follow for 14KM. The road becomes a good horse trail which continues to Puesto 38.2. Met the Puesto owner riding out. Then route is CC for a bit. All CC sections I walked were easy in open terrain and I never went more than 3KM of true CC before encountering a jeep, guanaco or cow trail. All river crossings were easy and knee deep or less in late January. A jeep track leads towards Rio Turbo, left it to ford the river and about 2KM after the ford I joined a good cow trail which led out towards Puesto 52.4. It becomes a jeep track as it nears the Puesto, which is visible from a long way off. The Puesto was occupied and they spotted me and came out in a jeep. They were friendly and invited me to stay at the Puesto.
8. I walked out about 15KM, saw no traffic en route. Approaching Estancia Rivadavia I saw the estancia workers in a jeep. I waved to them and they drove back and picked me up. I then hitched out from near the Estancia to Tolhuin in a logging truck.

Frank Januaray 2024. I was told that the The border will reopen on 1st Februaryis now open. They are building have built a bigger bridge which hopefully will withstand the winter rains. If the border is closed you can talk to the Argentinian border police and they should allow you to walk to the border without crossing it.
I met the owner of Estancia San Jose. He was friendly but at first told me to walk around the Estancia on the road. After a discussion he allowed me to go through on the RR.
