Desde el portón de acceso al Roble, a 1242 msnm, se recomienda continuar en auto 4,1 kilómetros más, hasta los 1680 msnm., en el filo que divide los valle de Caleu y de Olmué. Hacia el oeste, se tienen bellas vistas del palmar de Ocoa y de La Campana. Poco después de esta primera vista del valle de Olmué, aparece una bifurcación peatonal para el sendero que conduce a Ocoa (1680 msnm y punto más alto de la ruta). Es el punto para estacionar. Se debe girar a la izquierda, en dirección al oeste. (Para la cumbre del Roble se debe continuar por el camino principal vehicular, por la ruta descrita en [[Cerro el Roble (ruta vehicular)]] ). La ruta es ancha y agradable, a la sombra de los robles más septentrionales del hemisferio sur, y se interna con pendiente suave por la ladera sur del filo que separa los dos valles.

Tras 2,3 kilómetros, la huella se pasa a la ladera norte de este filo, de más exposición solar, y la vegetación se achaparra de golpe, desapareciendo los robles, pero obteniendo a cambio una bella vista del palmar de Ocoa a nuestros pies. Se debe andar un kilómetro más por esta ruta ancha hasta que desemboca en una antigua mina de cuarzo (en la ladera sur).
(si se girara a la derecha, se recorrería la ruta [[Caleu - Ocoa]]). Es en este punto cuando comienza el tramo "salvaje" de la ruta, a lo largo del Cordón de los Penitentes, pues no existe un sendero claro por un largo tramo. Se debe continuar por el filo, ascendiendo entre los arbustos y las rocas. Existen algunas tenues huellas de animales, pero en general no existe un sendero bien definido, por lo que la consigna es "siempre por el filo", a lo largo de una antigua pirca que lo corona la mayor parte del recorrido. Tras 15 minutos se llega a una cumbre (marcada como "cumbre 1") desde donde se ve la ruta hacia adelante.

El tramo siguiente es algo más confuso, porque el filo se hace menos nítido. Se recomienda seguir la pirca, que tuerce por algunos metros hacia el sur. Luego se debe avanzar de nuevo en dirección al oeste, con el objetivo de retomar el filo, el que se vuelve nuevamente visible. Para ello, se deberá bajar una ladera bastante hostil, entre arbustos, algunos de ellos espinosos. Poco antes de alcanzar la parte más baja, se alcanza un sendero que viene desde el sur, desde Olmué (marcado como "inicio de sendero") el que se debe seguir. La caminata adquiere de nuevo un carácter más amigable. 35o metros más adelante se alcanza una planicie rodeada de árboles. Poco después se inicia el ascenso al rocoso cerro Penitentes, último escollo de la ruta. El sendero será claro por un largo rato, ascendiendo gradualmente. El tramo final anterior al Penitentes, la huella y la pirca desaparecen (después de todo, el Penitentes es una pirca natural) y se debe buscar el acceso entre los arbustos. El último tramo antes de la cumbre requiere ayudarse con las manos para trepar las rocas, pero no reviste una dificultad seria ni justifica el uso de cuerdas, aunque la vegetación dificulta en cierta medida el ascenso. La cumbre del Penitentes es un bello mirador de la ruta que hemos venido siguiendo, así como de los dos valles que el cordón separa. El tramo inmediatamente posterior es la parte más complicada de la ruta, pues debe buscarse un paso entre la densa vegetación espinosa de la ladera norte (la ladera sur es un pequeño precipicio) y las grandes rocas. Pero encontrar el paso es posible, y luego vuelve a existir un tenue sendero que continúa con cierta claridad a lo largo la [[Glosario#A|arista]] misma hasta el Paso Ocoa, el punto más bajo del filo, y punto en que esta ruta se conecta con la [[Travesía del Parque Nacional La Campana]].

Acá hay tres opciones: se puede optar por bajar hacia el sur, ya sea por Granizo o por Cajón Grande (cómo se describe en esta reseña) lo que toma cerca de 1h 45', o se puede bajar hacia el norte, en dirección a Ocoa, lo que toma cerca de 2h 30', y para lo cual se debe leer el tramo respectivo en [[Travesía del Parque Nacional La Campana]]. Si se baja hacia el sur (por cualquiera de las dos rutas) se recorrerá un frondoso bosque de lingues, peumos, litres y quillayes y se llegará a Olmué, más cerca de Santiago y con buses cada hora hacia Santiago. Si se baja hacia el norte, se recorrerá un bello y singular palmar, y se llegará a CONAF, donde no existe movilización, y luego a Ocoa y la carretera panamericana (con numerosos buses pero que no necesariamente se detienen en el camino).

* A Granizo: Descrito en [[Travesía del Parque Nacional La Campana]]. Este punto está más cerca del pueblo de Olmué.
* A Cajón Grande: El cartel al comienzo indica 5,5 kilómetros de caminata desde el Paso Ocoa. La ruta es siempre muy clara, aunque estrecha, a la sombra de la tupida vegetación de la quebrada (de donde recibe su nombre). Al comienzo, baja abruptamente, zigzagueando. Luego la pendiente disminuye, y se debe cruzar varias veces el estero de la quebrada. Tras 1h 30' de marcha se alacanza una bifurcación. Se debe tomar la izquierda, y continuar por un sendero muy ancho (si se tomara la derecha, se seguiría por el sendero ''Plateu''). Sólo 15 minutos después, se alcanza CONAF, donde hay estacionamiento. Si se camina 15 minutos más por el camino vehicular, se llega a un paradero donde es posible tomar buses a Olmué.

===Tiempo esperado===
Entre seis y siete horas desde el estacionamiento descrito. La referencia del primer autor es 4h 30' hasta el fin del filo (Paso Ocoa) y 1h 45' desde este punto hasta CONAF de Cajón Grande u Olmué. Agregar 30 a 40 minutos si se parte caminando desde el control de ingreso al Roble en Caleu.

* Volver hasta el auto puede ser bastante complicado si se deja en el inicio mismo del sendero. Más aún considerando que la puerta de acceso al Roble cierra a las 18 horas. En caso de ir en auto, lo mejor es dejarlo al menos antes de la puerta. Sin embargo, si no se cuenta con un alma generosa dispuesta a ir a dejar al punto de partida, lo mejor es realizar esta ruta en transporte público.

The last section before the summit requires helping with the hands to climb the rocks, but it is not a serious difficulty nor does it justify the use of ropes, although the vegetation makes the ascent somewhat difficult. The summit of the Penitentes is a beautiful viewpoint of the route that we have been following, as well as of the two valleys that the cord separates. The section immediately following is the most complicated part of the route, since one should look for a passage between the dense thorny vegetation of the northern slope (the southern slope is a small precipice) and the large rocks. But finding the way is possible, and then there is a tenuous path that continues with some clarity along the [[Glossary # A | arista]] same until the Ocoa Pass, the lowest point of the edge, and point at which this route connects with the [[Travesía del Parque Nacional La Campana]].

 From the access gate to El Roble, at 1242 meters above sea level, it is recommended to continue driving 4.1 kilometers further, up to 1680 meters above sea level, on the edge that divides the Caleu and Olmué valleys. To the west, there are beautiful views of the palmar of Ocoa and La Campana. Shortly after this first view of the Olmué valley, a pedestrian fork appears for the path that leads to Ocoa (1680 masl and highest point of the route). It's the parking point.
